Back to the Sea of Stars for today’s Supporting Cast, a specialist in death magic (which is necrourgury, not necromancy).

Exeline Eveningsong, Earthkine Necrourgist

Quote: Without death, the cycle of life is incomplete, a broken wheel traveling nowhere.

I do not wield the magic of death to cause harm, but to end suffering and allow completion of the cycle.

Description: Even among the Earthkine, Exeline is notably thin and, while a woman of late middle age, she seems andrognous.  Her auburn hair is so dark, it appears black in most circumstances, loose it falls to her heel, but she wear it in a tight braid.  Her eyes are a dark blue and knowing.

Exeline favors loose clothes of dark colors, tending to greens and reds.  She has a girdle of black leather, containing magical pockets, that she almost always wears.  Her jewelry is mostly silver with gems and a few jade pieces.

Background: Like many of the Earthkine, Exeline grew up in a world that she could feel, deep in her spirit, that was broken and incomplete.  Her parent we followers of the Flower and Leaf, Tree and Root, their faith was deep but for Exeline, it never, well, took root.  For Exeline, it was a soil and earth, death and rebirth, that called to her.  This combine with her Lack, she has no sense of disgust, dead things, even rotting ones, do not disturb her in the least.

She stumbled into studying Necrourgy, when visiting her uncle, a skilled wizard, she found the section of his library devoted to death magic and was immediately captivated.  Her parents tried to steer her away from such magic, but her uncle saw both Exeline‘s desire for and talent with necrourgy and guided her early steps on that path.

Since then, she has traveled extensively, seeking out knowledge that was forgotten or lost.  While most think of Exeline as some devoped to her craft, this is only partly true, the secret she seeks to explain is how were the gods killed.

Presenting this Character: While most of the Earthkine have a quite air of confidence, Exeline is supremely confident, death holds no fear for her.  Partly as she has magic in place that she hopes will keep her in this world even after death, partly because she wished to learn what truly lies beyind the veil.

Exeline has ferreted out information on the old gods, hidden among the secrets of magic, from talking with ancient shades, and from stories passed down through the Earthkine.  What she has leared is that the gods should be deathless, even if their form was killed, they should have been reborn . . . yet they were not.  Exeline is driven to find out how the Empress killed the unkillable.

What can she do?: Exeline is a mistress of necrourgy, one of a vanishing few among the Earthkine who can claim such a title.  She has spirits bound to her service and can raise unliving servants as needed, but she rarely does so as it is distressing to others.  Exeline has unleash the energy of death but is careful when doing so, as it wishes to consume more that she would wish.

Though it is her knowledge that makes Exeline so powerful, she understands secrets that most are afraid to even look for.  She is sure she knows more of the gods than almost any other non-dragon alive.  She finds it distressing that she cannot share her knowledge directly with others, but will leave cryptic clues to those seeking their own knowledge of the gods.

Physically, she is not overly strong, but she can overcome most hardships and, while not afraid of death, she will not shrug off this mortal coil easily.

Who might know her and why: Anyone who practices the arts of Necrourgy may have heard of her, as she is one of the oldest still living practitioners of such magics in the Sea of Stars.

Anyone hunting for the secrets of the slain gods may have come to Exeline’s  attention and, if so, she may have arranged for a clue pointing them toward some piece of information she has discovered in her searches.

She is known in many magical circles, especially those of the Earthkine, for her bredth of knowledge and unusal specialty.

Plot Hooks: A book has been left for you, a bookmark highlights a passage about a hidden place that maybe in a nearby ruin.  All that you can learn about the person who left the book was that they were tall and thin.

If you have found a piece of necrourgic magic, there are few more able to explain its function than Exeline.

Someone has accidentally released a necrourgic plague, the characters are hired to find Exeline and bring her back for surely she has the skills to stop it.

Note: The Earthkine are to the Sea of Stars what elves are to most other fantasy settings.  Not the kind of people who usually get mixed up in death magic.
