🛠️ How Crafting Works in D&D 5e

Crafting in Dungeons & Dragons lets your character create nonmagical items, Potions of Healing, and Spell Scrolls using the right tools, time, and materials.

If you’re really interested in crafting nonmagical items, I’d check out the Crafter Origin feat.

Here’s how it breaks down:

Crafting Nonmagical Items

To craft a mundane item—like armor, weapons, or gear—you’ll need:

  • Proficiency with the right tool (e.g., Smith’s Tools for plate armor)
  • Raw materials equal to half the item’s cost, rounded down
  • Time, calculated by dividing the item’s cost by 10 (in GP), rounding up to the nearest day

Example: Crafting a 50 GP item takes 5 days and 25 GP in raw materials.

Working 8 hours per day is standard, and multiple characters can help craft the same item (if they have the right proficiency), which reduces the total number of days.

If there isn’t a tool assigned for a specific item (like a book), the DM decides what tool to use. In the book’s case, I would assign the Leatherworker’s Tools.

Brewing Potions of Healing

To brew a Potion of Healing:

  • You need Herbalism Kit proficiency
  • Spend 25 GP on ingredients
  • Work for 1 full day (8 hours)

Scribing Spell Scrolls

Spellcasters can create Spell Scrolls if they:

  • Are proficient in Arcana or Calligrapher’s Supplies
  • Have the spell prepared each day of scribing
  • Provide any required material components (consumed at completion if the spell normally consumes them)

Cantrip scrolls scale with your level—the version of the spell on the scroll is as strong as if you cast it yourself.
